One of the big perks of photography, aside from meeting new people, is discovering new places. New places inspire and jump start the creative impulse like nothing other. Living and working in urban Los Angeles, it's easy to get comfortable and stay put in the city, and I often forget about all the natural beauty lurking just outside its boundaries. Case in point -- this recent and amazingly jazzed engagement session with Frankie and Kathleen. About an hour's drive northwest of my usual stomping grounds, an offramp lured me off the familar freeways into the windy wilderness of the Santa Monica mountains. Gone was the bumper to bumper. Now -- trees, golden fields, and sweet open road consumed my vision.
Frankie and Kathleen selected not one, but two killer locations! The first, Paramount Ranch, is an old Wild West movie set open to the public, nestled in Agoura Hills. They've filmed quite a few movies and TV shows here, but today it was vacant, and perfect: the colors, the warm glaze of late afternoon sun, and a couple shining with love, great energy, and spirit. We had so much fun collaborating and exploring all the cool nooks and crannies to take pictures in, we lost track of time!
We jumped in our cars and cut through the mountains, straight to the ocean, for our next spot: Point Dume, Malibu. The temperature dropped a refreshing 20 degrees from Agoura, and we first hit the beach before climbing to the top of the landmark bluff. What a view from above. Frankie originally proposed to Kathleen atop the scenic point -- way to go! -- and it was great being able to recapture on film some of the magic this place holds for them.

When their custom, gold and burgundy 8x10 wedding invitation graced our mailbox -- a welcomed diamond in the rough amongst the usual postal suspects -- I just knew their wedding was going to be a grand event.
A wonderful couple, eye-popping colors, choreographed dances -- great food! This is the first Indian wedding I've had the pleasure of attending, and wow, what an amazing experience. It was really a sight to behold, a celebration spanning the course of not one, but three days, with a beautiful outdoor evening ceremony at the Cerritos Performing Arts Center, and a royal reception the following evening at the Long Beach Westin. Chaitali and Hiren are friends of Gian and I, and it was fun seeing them tie their own knot after having them as guests at our wedding two years ago.
I look at weddings a bit differently now. Even as a guest, I'm always scoping out possible picture moments, or admiring the hired photographer at work. Chaitali and Hiren encouraged me to bring along my own camera, but I also wanted to be respectful of their event photographer, and not intrude on their work. So, I left all the big gear at home and brought along a single 50mm lens on my trusty Canon. I'm deliberately a little bit more removed from the action here than usual, but it was a fun challenge to keep to my own space, work from a distance, and be creative from the point-of-view of an invited guest.

After recently selling a couple of my Plum Island prints, I decided it was time I finally invested in a print of my work for our own enjoyment at home. In this digital age, too often images don't make it past the computer screen, and you forget how nice it is to hang something up on the wall.
